Required Registration of Select Agents

The federal government enacted the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness Act of 2002 and the USA PATRIOT ACT to reduce the risk of unauthorized use of certain biological and chemical agents. These laws require that research institutions, including UC Berkeley, collect information regarding certain “select agents” and register their presence with the federal government. Noncompliance could result in a $500,000 fine or five years in prison.

The list of select agents that must be reported to the campus if they are included in research proposals is available on the federal National Select Agent Registry. Indicate proposed use of any of the agents below on the Sponsored Projects Office Proposal Review Form (PRF). Genetic material, nonviable material, vaccine strains, nontoxic chains, or any modification of the listed biological agents or chemical toxins must also be reported.
